AGENDA

My Experiences from RootsTech 2023 & Other Conferences – John Roads
SIG Member John Roads will offer:
  1. A short presentation on topics of interest from the recent Roots Tech 2023.
  2. A review CeCe Moore’s recent I4GG conference in San Diego, including their announcement of the new DNA Justice data base.
  3. A brief review of the recent on-line seminar—Diahan Southard’s  YourDNAGuide.com  “Your DNA Matches: Filter, Don’t File” on-line seminar. John also plans a more detailed presentation on “Filter-Don’t File” technique at a future SIG meeting.
  4. An announcement of Diahan Southard’s 12-month DNA study group starting in April.
A DNA Case Study – Susan Fabian
Kelly’s grandfather was a mystery. With so many men with his same common name in a big city, determining which one was the right one to follow a paper trail was challenging. With DNA as a clue, her grandfather was found and his line was traced back two more generations.

In this case study, Susan will review the steps she took to determine the objective, gather the background info, and use a combination of DNA and traditional genealogical research to break down this brick wall.

New FTDNA Tools – Everett Johnson

Everett will cover several of the new tools at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA).

General
  • Wins – At the start of the meeting, we will ask participants to share a recent “win.”  A “win” could be a brick-wall breakthrough, a connection with a new cousin, a course completed, a DNA discovery, using a new tool effectively, or something else.
  • Homework – At each meeting, we will provide a short homework exercise to illustrate a concept, use a tool, etc.  We ask a few participants at the following meeting to report back to the group on this exercise and what they learned from it.  The homework exercise for this meeting (from the March meeting) is:
    • Setup a free account at DNAPainter.com, explore some of the features that the WATO tool has to offer, and share what you found most interesting and helpful.
Informal discussions following end of meeting

Note - We plan to record this meeting, but not the informal discussions.  Recordings are usually available a few days later in the Members Only—>Videos: DNA SIG section of the PCGS website.
